Set-Up Checklist

To keep turtles healthy indoors you will need the following:

  • Aquarium or Turtle Tank - Minimum 610mm. Fill your tank 150mm from the top with water.
  • Tank Stand or Cabinet to fit above.
  • Styrene Foam 12mm - Positioned between tank and stand to absorb shock and minimise breakage.
  • Crushed Limestone (needed to maintain a healthy shell & bones and also helps stabilize pH in the water) 3cm deep. We do not recommend gravel in your tank as turtles will swallow small gravel with their food which will cause a fatal blockage. Sharp edged gravel will damage their shell. Larger gravel or small stones can roll onto a limb and pin down your turtle causing it to drown.
  • Turtle Dock - Turtles need to climb out of the water from time-to-time to dry off or bask. A log or rock can be used but this reduces the turtles swimming area
  • Lights & Holders - With fluorescent tube suitable for reptiles (10% UVB). This should be changed every 12 months. UV Lights need to be 150mm from the waters surface for maximum results. Do not place glass or any other material between the UV light and the water as it will filter out the UV rays. With a 60 Watt incandescent globe, fixed above the basking area. Lights should be left on for 8-10 hours per day to simulate day light hours.
  • Rock Salt - 1 teaspoon per 10 litres of water. Salt reduces skin infections.
  • Submersible heater - Water temperature should be kept at 24-26°C
  • Thermometer - To check water temperature
  • Filtration System - Canister or Hang-on type. Turtles excrete much more waste than fish, the higher water turnover the better.
  • pH Water Tester Kit - Water should be tested regularly, recommended level pH 7-8.2
  • Siphon and Nylon Pot Mitt to clean your tank. Clean your tank and change 1/3 of the water every 2-3 weeks.

If you find it hard to obtain Crushed Limestone, we can supply it for $10.00 per 4kg bag.
